With Dundee United’s defeat of Dunfermline¬†2-0 this weekend, the group stage of the Betfred Scottish League Cup was set¬†with the top team in each group plus the four best second place finishers advancing to the knockout round of 16.

The Scottish League Cup is interesting in that this year, it reverted to a group stage format pitting all clubs not playing in a European competition. In the second round, the four teams competing in Europe join the competition. The schedule was compressed this season to allow for the Scotland Premier League to hold a winter break and for the League Cup to finish in November.

The second round holds some interesting draws for those interested in the smaller sides. Peterhead and Motherwell look to upset Rangers and Celtic, respectively. Aberdeen, who finished second in the league last season, drew Ayr United away in what could be the best draw of the round. All matches will be played August 9-11.

Which of these match-ups intrigues you the most? Ross County won the competition last season, so can another minnow pull off the upset again in 2016?

Dundee United v Partick Thistle

Celtic v Motherwell
